DAY 28

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. Timothy 6:10

Many people do destructive things to themselves and to others in order to make more money. Greed, the inordinate desire for riches, blinds the mind and corrupts the soul. Money isn’t bad in itself, but when we start thinking that all our problems would go away if only we had enough money, we turn into an idol. And idols always lead to destruction. How attached am I to money, ease, and the things money can buy? How often do I make little, voluntary sacrifices to keep my heart free from greed and sensuality? How can I be more responsible with my money, and at the same time, more generous? Reread the verse: tell Jesus that you don’t ever want money to interfere with your relationship with him.

(Make the Sign of the Cross)

Lord, help me to master
Pleasure-seeking by austerity,
Greed by generosity,
Anger by gentleness,
And apathy by fervor.
Make me prudent in my plans,
Courageous in times of danger,
Patient in suffering,
And unassuming in prosperity.
Keep me, Lord, attentive at prayer,
Temperate in food and drink,
Diligent in my work,
And firm in my good intentions.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Pope Clement XI
