Jessica Rodarte National Day of Encouragement

9.10.18 World Suicide Prevention Day
Every forty seconds, of every minute, of every hour of every day. Someone attempts to end their life. 800,000 people die by suicide every year.

This has to change. We have to come together and speak about the importance of mental health. Suicide is real! It’s not something to take lightly. We see it too often now on the news that people are taking their own lives. As someone who battles with mental illness, I have been in those dark places with thoughts of suicide. Every time I hear of another death it hits so close to home. Because I can only imagine what was going through the heads of those people that felt they could no longer go on. It is just absolutely heartbreaking. And to think that maybe if someone reached out the outcome may have been different.

Take a minute: to listen, to hear, to understand. You never know the battles people are facing. Educate yourself and know the signs. It’s so important that we check in with one another! One message, one call, one smile can make all the difference. We need to have these discussions and end this stigma. Together we can save lives!

To anyone who is experiencing a difficult time and feel that you can no longer go on, please do not lose hope. Know that you are loved and you are important. You are not alone in this world, there are people here for you. Put your hand over your heart and realize that you have a purpose! When you feel like you are just up against a wall, remember this life is worth living; keep fighting.

I’ve spent my whole life as a Martha. ⠀

I like to get things done – but now and as best as I can.⠀
I like to work – but I can always do more/better.⠀
I like to serve – but the “how” can get in the way of my “why.”⠀
I like to be recognized – but I will never get enough “gold stars.”⠀

I may have the best intentions, but so often times I’ve found myself doing things because I “have to” or I “should.” I always feel like there’s more I can do, and of course, there’s never enough time.⠀

And so I find myself head down, busying my way through life, distracted by of these self-inflicted “urgent” priorities, when all I need to do to get things right is lift my gaze up to Jesus.⠀

If you know the story of Mary and Martha, you may have found yourself identifying with Martha, and yet immediately knowing Mary had it right all along. Every time I read this passage in the Bible, I’m reminded of how easily I let my worries and distractions get in the way.⠀

I don’t know about you, but it’s crazy how fast I can fall right into Martha’s mindset of annoyance, of frustration, of disappointment when I don’t live up to my own self-imposed perfectionism. ⠀

It’s easy to get so focused on the details – and expect everyone else to follow our same way of thinking – yet ultimately just lose sight of what really matters.⠀

I don’t know about you, but I need a little more Mary in me.⠀

Because I need a LOT more Jesus in me – and Mary knew that is found by laying your life at the Lord’s feet.⠀

“How good it feels to come back to Him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking His mercy. Christ, who told us to forgive one another “seventy times seven” (Mt 18:22) has given us His example: He has forgiven us seventy times seven. Time and time again He bears us on His shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness which never disappoints, but is always capable of restoring our joy, He makes it possible for us to lift up our heads and to start anew. Let us not flee from the resurrection of Jesus, let us never give up, come what will. May nothing inspire more than His life, which impels us onwards!” /// Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam // all for the greater glory of God. I’ve been reminding myself of this lately, that no matter what my responsibilities are, do it with the Lord. Do it for the Lord. Anything—any task, any conversation, can become prayer if it is offered for the Lord, out of love. Grateful for this truth. – Valerie Delgado + Grace Painted
